Reading Books

From their first day at school children in Reception will be given a chance to choose a 'my choice' library book. These books are for the children to share with their families and will often not be at the correct reading level. They are chosen by the children according to their own interests and fascinations. Children will continue to have the option to choose from these 'my choice' library books as they move through their years at school.

In addition to this, children will take home a decodable book which they have been reading in their phonics lessons at school and an additional bookbag book which is at their individual reading level.

Once children graduate from the Read Write Inc Phonics scheme they will then move on to the Accelerated Reader Scheme where they will choose a book at their assessed level from our wide range of Accelerated Reader books.

Reading VIPERS

At Greenford School children are taught the skills of reading through the use of VIPERS after they have progressed from our Read Write Inc. Phonics Programme.

What are VIPERS?

VIPERS is an anagram to aid the recall of the 6 reading domains as part of the UK’s reading curriculum.  They are the key areas which we feel children need to know and understand in order to improve their comprehension of texts and build their love of reading. The more they understand the more they will enjoy what they read and have the skills to read a greater variety of literature.

VIPERS stands for:

The 6 domains focus on the comprehension aspect of reading and not the mechanics: decoding, fluency, prosody etc. As such, VIPERS is not a reading scheme but rather a method of ensuring that teachers ask, and students are familiar with, a range of questions. They allow the teacher to track the type of questions asked and the children’s responses to these which allows for targeted questioning afterwards. The VIPERS method forms an integral part of our daily Guided Reading lessons.

Accelerated Reader

Accelerated Reader™ — A Time-Saving Start-Up Guide | Pandora Books

Accelerated Reader is a national program used to assist in the improvement of pupils` reading abilities and their comprehension of what they read. Accelerated Reader provides pupils with tens of thousands of book choices (and quizzes) to meet their individual reading needs. Statistics show that the more a child reads, the higher his/her performance is in all subject areas.

This program uses a computer-based vocabulary test called the STAR test that adjusts while the pupil is taking the test to her/his individual reading level. Pupils complete this initial testing early on in the school year and each pupil can track their progress with the number of words they read and the number of quizzes they pass.

In our new library, pupils from Years 2-6 can see the reading journey they are on as they travel the 'AR Express!' towards the 'Millionaire Station' where the children who have read read a million words have arrived. There are many awards and prizes for all of the children in the school as they read their way along the tracks!

World Book Day

Year 6 and Reception got together on World Book Day to share their love of reading. First the Reception children read their decodable Phonics books to Year 6 and then the older children read to the younger children. It was great fun!
